Understanding Pre-Workout

What is actually in a pre-workout formula, and who it is (and is not) for.

The common ingredients

Most pre-workout formulas are built around caffeine for alertness and energy, often alongside beta-alanine (the ingredient behind the "tingling" sensation) and citrulline, both studied for supporting training performance and endurance.

Stimulant vs. stim-free

Caffeine-based formulas suit people training earlier in the day or sensitive to how caffeine affects their sleep; stim-free options give similar ingredients like citrulline and beta-alanine without the caffeine, useful for evening sessions.

Timing and caution

Most people take pre-workout 20-30 minutes before training. If you are sensitive to caffeine, pregnant, or on medication that interacts with stimulants, a stim-free option or skipping it entirely is the safer call -- check with a doctor if unsure.
